The Ballon d’Or is the most prestigious individual honor a football player could receive, but what if you added the word “Super” in front of it?
The first awarding of the Ballon d’Or took place in 1956. The vast majority of the world’s greatest players have access to it.
But only one person has earned the title of “Super Ballon d’Or,” and that person is Real Madrid legend, Alfredo Di Stefano.
Between 1956 and 1960, Di Stefano contributed significantly to Real’s 308 goals and five straight European Cup victories.
In 1957 and 1959, he twice took home the Ballon d’Or. Three years after his second victory, award recipients France Football once more originally honored his accomplishments.
Only European athletes were eligible for the Super Ballon d’Or Award. It was to commemorate the magazine France Football’s 30th birthday.
Di Stefano was born in Argentina and performed there up until 1949. Later, he represented Colombia and Spain, earning citizenship that made him eligible for this award.
The legendary Johan Cruyff and Michel Platini were among the nominees, but Di Stefano won the award 30 years after his second Ballon d’Or victory.
The trophy and the Ballon d’Or have very similar appearances. However, the sculpture’s base has many gold miniature footballs resembling Ferrero Rocher candies.
According to Julien’s auctions, the trophy sold for a staggering £187,500.
Diego Maradona, a legend in Argentina, received the “Golden Ballon d’Or” in 1995, which honors non-European athletes.
But many supporters believe that now that Lionel Messi has won the World Cup and the Ballon d’Or seven times, he deserves to have his unique version.
One person wrote: “Super Ballón d’Or, an honor bestowed upon the greatest player of the last three decades, was only ever won by Di Stéfano. Please give it to Messi as the icing on his fanciful tale.”
“Give it to Leo,” a second said, “because I had no idea it existed before this very second.”
Added by another, “What are these buried riches? He merits one.”
Fourth opinion: “He’ll understand it quickly. In the previous 30 years, nobody else has deserved it more.”
