Mauricio Pochettino desires to take a former Tottenham player to Chelsea.
The Argentine is currently the front-runner to lead Chelsea, with Chelsea’s owners meeting in LA to approve a contract offer. An official announcement could happen soon.
Pochettino appears eager to combine the two, even though Todd Boehly and his fellow investors have been restructuring the club. They have separated the coaching staff from the recruitment team—more along the lines of a German model.
According to The Daily Mail, the former Spurs manager would rather bring Hitchen to West London to assist with transfers.
Throughout two stints, Hitchen held a variety of positions at Tottenham. He came back in 2017 as chief scout, advanced to director of technical performance. He then left the team shortly after Fabio Paratici was hired. His role appearing to have become more diluted.
The former Macclesfield Town player began working at White Hart Lane nearly two decades ago. He was instrumental in the acquisition of Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Luka Modric.
After that, Daniel Comolli, his former director of football at Tottenham, brought him to Liverpool. At Liverpool he is credited with being a key factor in Luis Suarez’s acquisition from Ajax.
Hitchen, who took over for Paul Mitchell at Spurs, quickly forged a close friendship and working relationship with Pochettino.
But his signings of players like Giovani Lo Celso, Lucas Moura, Tanguy Ndombele, and Serge Aurier were less successful.
When he was only employed as a scout, Hitchen had a particularly thorough understanding of the French market. However, his responsibilities since have grown significantly.
Given that the team has already hired technical directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley in addition to Christopher Vivell, it is unclear if there is room in Chelsea’s hiring structure for Hitchen.
The midfield and striker positions are thought to be two areas where Pochettino needs to make significant investments this summer.
However, Chelsea’s squad is incredibly bloated. Before they can start spending money again, they must offload a ton of players. This is to both make room for new additions to the team and adhere to Financial Fair Play regulations.
