Lisandro Martinez’s text message to Man Utd teammates says it all.
Just days after winning the World Cup, Lisandro Martinez already has to win a championship with Manchester United in mind.
Martinez became the fifth player to win the World Cup while playing for United. Argentina’s win over France came after a thrilling penalty shootout on Sunday in Qatar.
The winning Argentina team was greeted by tens of thousands of supporters, including the defender. They carried the World Cup trophy in a homecoming parade yesterday in Buenos Aires.
Martinez immediately focused on United’s longest trophy drought lasting four decades, the first trophy since 2017, after winning the biggest prize in football.
After Sunday’s incredible final, United midfielder Scott McTominay revealed he messaged teammate Martinez. The center-back declared that his club was already in line for new glory.
McTominay said, “I sent Lisandro a message the other day to say congratulations. We move on to the next one, he said. His recent World Cup victory demonstrates the group’s mentality.
“At this football club, winning trophies is the most crucial factor in success. We have a great opportunity to begin that journey with the manager we currently have, particularly this year.
“We have a great opportunity to act and start pushing. All the coaches on the team have firmly stated that they believe this is the year in which we can succeed. They firmly hold that.”
The Europa League, won by United five years ago while Jose Mourinho was their manager, was their most recent trophy. Under the direction of his new boss Erik ten Hag, McTominay is determined to put an end to that protracted wait.
“Whenever a new manager comes in, the crowd will be so happy and will love seeing the football we’re playing, especially with the manager we have now,” said McTominay.
