Complete list of clubs that rejected Mason Greenwood before his shocking Getafe move
Mason Greenwood reportedly turned down numerous offers from clubs before his deadline-day loan move to Getafe.
It was clear that earlier this month that Greenwood will carry on with his career outside of Manchester United. This comes after the Old Trafford club’s internal investigation came to a conclusion.
On deadline day for transfers, it was clear that Greenwood would spend the 23–24 season on loan at Getafe of the Spanish La Liga.
Mason Greenwood has agreed to a season-long loan with La Liga team Getafe, pending international clearance, according to a statement from United. With the change, Greenwood may start to resurrect his career outside of Manchester United.
Manchester United
“During this time of transition, the club will continue to support Mason and his family,” it says.
Before Greenwood, 21, joined Getafe, other clubs reportedly turned down the chance to sign him, according to The Athletic.
According to the report, representatives contacted range of clubs; Brentford was one of the English teams who declined.
German Bundesliga team Borussia Dortmund, the Italian teams AS Roma and AC Milan, clubs in the Saudi Professional League, all declined to sign the Englishman.
Lazio of Serie A had expressed interest in Greenwood. Lazio, however, coul not come to a deal before the Italian transfer window closed at 7 p.m.
Criticism
Additionally, since getting Greenwood, Getafe has been under fire.
Getafe executives should immediately reverse their hiring of Greenwood, Ana Bella Estevez told the Mirror. “They should never have done so. There is no justification for an organization with a large public presence, such as Getafe, to take an apathetic attitude on violence against women.”
The team’s manager, Jose Bordales, justified the choice, saying: “It is a really difficult circumstance to trivialize that problem. Since the incidence is publicly known, the appropriate things were done.
“Everybody is aware of the outcome, which was acquittal. He enters Getafe with great excitement and is a very high level football player.”
