Karim Benzema’s replacement in France’s World Cup squad could be Anthony Martial of Manchester United.
After sustaining a thigh injury during his first training session with the Les Blues squad on Saturday night, Benzema became the most recent international superstar to be disqualified from Qatar 2022.
The 2022 Ballon d’Or winner’s World Cup campaign is now officially over, so he will now sit out for at least three weeks.
The 26-man squad of Didier Deschamps must add a replacement by Monday night, and Martial of United is one of the potential replacements.
The three front-runners, as per L’Equipe, are Wissam Ben Yedder, Moussa Diaby, and Martial.
The 26-year-old hasn’t played for his country since October 2021, but this season, even in a campaign marred by injury, he has displayed flashes of excellent form for Manchester United.
Martial, who has only started three games for United this season, has scored four goals in those games and has been named the team’s first-choice striker by manager Erik ten Hag. If he can stay healthy, Martial will be essential to any success United experiences this season.
According to L’Equipe, Deschamps must make a “difficult decision” between Thomas Lemar of Atletico Madrid and Martin Terrier of Lyon.
While insisting that his replacement will have a bigger role to play in Qatar in the upcoming weeks, Benzema has sent his teammates a message of good luck.
He has never given up in my life, but tonight he must consider the team as he always has, so logic tells me to give up my position to someone who can support our team in having a successful World Cup, Benzema wrote. that sincerely appreciate all of your encouraging letters.
